The Runway Safety Improvement Project

Attention Neighbors

In Phase 3 and 4 of the project the main runway that usually handles 85% of air traffic is temporarily closed. Therefore, the alternate runway which usually has 15% of air traffic is handling 100%, causing traffic directly over Windsor neighborhoods that don't usually experience this much air traffic. Night closures will occur frequently from 10:30pm – 6:00am, with the exception of emergency helicopter operations. This phase of the project will end in October, and we appreciate your patience.

Phase 4 Construction – Temporary Airfield Configuration

The Airport will be entering Phase 4 of the Runway Safety Improvement project at the end of July. Phase 4 will last approximately 90 days, finishing the project in November 2014.

Phase 3 Construction - Temporary Airfield Configuration

The Airport will be entering Phase 3 of the Runway Safety Improvement project at the end of June. Phase 3 will last approximately 20 days, starting July 1, 2014.

Improvement Overview

Due to runway incursion incidents that have occurred nationwide, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working to fulfill a congressional mandate (Public Law No. 109-115) that all Runway Safety Areas (RSA) at Commercial Service Airports be brought into compliance with FAA standards by 2015.

The project at Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) will bring the Airport into compliance with FAA standards and will enhance operational safety.
